Contrary to what some believe, they are not the same organization.
Yes, Juliette Gordon Low was friends with Boy Scout founder, Sir Robert Baden-Powell. Yes, she was inspired by the Bot Scouts to begin her own organization based on the same ideals. However, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts have never been affiliated with one another.
3. Girl Scouts Stands for Girl Empowerment
Juliette Gordon Low was deaf due to infections and injuries. She was a lady of high society with great privilege but was often frustrated by the feeling that she had been unprepared for life. She was driven by self-improvement, which became a foundational pillar of Girl Scouts.
Gordon Low believed that any success was “within the power of any intelligent girl, through study and perseverance.” She thought women could pursue careers in aviation, architecture, accounting, medicine, and research.
Today, 52% of women in the House of Representatives and 76% of women in the US Senate are former Girl Scouts.
