About the Series
Based on the best-selling picture book series from Andrea Beaty, Ada Twist, Scientist follows the adventures of eight-year-old Ada Twist, a small scientist with enormous curiosity who aspires to discover the truth about absolutely everything. With the help of her two best friends, Rosie Revere and Iggy Peck, Ada unravels mysteries for her friends and family.
But solving the mystery is only the beginning because science isn’t just about learning how and why and what — it’s about putting that knowledge into action to make the world a better place. The animated preschool series was created by Chris Nee and developed by the Obamas’ production company, Higher Ground.
The series will also include real scientists to inspire young viewers and lend authenticity. Alie Ward, a science correspondent for CBS’s The Henry Ford’s Innovation Nation with Mo Rocca, and Dr. Knatokie Ford, former senior policy advisor at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, will be consultants on the series.
Ada Twist marks one of the first series projects written and produced by Nee for Netflix, based on a multi-year deal with the streaming service. Under the deal, Nee will write and produce new animated and live-action series, while giving Netflix a first-look option on feature film projects from her production company, Laughing Wild. Nee has long championed kids’ stories with diverse representation and points of view for more than two decades, a factor that made her a desirable asset to the streaming service and to audiences around the world.
“Chris is an absolute master at crafting characters that kids want to spend time with and telling stories that are representative of all different types of families and communities,” said Melissa Cobb, VP Kids & Family at Netflix, in a previous statement. “She is among the very best and most prolific artists working in kids content today and we are so honored that Chris has chosen to make Netflix her creative home.”
The show was a perfect fit for Higher Ground, the production company created by the Obamas, whose mandate is focused on diverse storytelling and a commitment to unique creators and voices. In a previous statement, executive producers for Higher Ground, Tonia Davis and Priya Swaminathan, said: “The Higher Ground team was inspired to produce Ada Twist, Scientist by President Obama and Mrs. Obama’s enduring commitment to young people, their education, and knowing no bounds or limits to dreams for their future. This is exactly the type of show Higher Ground was founded to create – powerful, meaningful storytelling for the whole family.”
“I’m thrilled to be partnering with Higher Ground to bring Ada Twist to the screen,” Nee said. “As a fan of the books I was taken with the diverse characters, striking designs and vital message that science matters. Plus, Ada fulfills my personal need to populate children’s television with strong girls who aren’t afraid to be the smartest kids in the room.”
