Some little ones may demand furry friends as their companions of choice, but one toddler from Salt Lake County in Utah had a different plan. Two-year-old Theo’s budding friendship with Benny, a plastic skeleton, is currently taking social media by storm.
Theo’s mother, 27-year-old Abigail Brady, shares the pair’s adventures on her Instagram and TikTok accounts. She hopes that the posts can spread some much-needed cheer in strangers’ lives.
“2020 has been probably one of the craziest years in a while and I know it has brought a lot of people a lot of turmoil and a lot of hardship,” Brady told TODAY. “My hope is that this can just spread some happiness. Even if it makes someone’s day for a couple of minutes, that makes me so happy.”
An Unlikely Bond
On September 15, Brady went down to her basement to put their dog in his kennel while they went to visit a local reservoir. When she noticed the basement had flooded, she stopped to clean it up. While she was cleaning, Theo found the skeleton stashed in the basement.
Brady helped Theo bring it upstairs, thinking they would start decorating for Halloween early this year.
Theo, however, had different plans for the five-foot-tall skeleton. He demanded that the skeleton join them on their visit to a local reservoir.
“I was like, ‘This is going to be fun. We’ll just bring the skeleton with us and it’ll be a party,’” Brady said. “Ever since then, the skeleton’s been coming everywhere with us.”
Brady shared a montage of Theo and Benny’s first outing at the reservoir to TikTok and the video has gotten over two million views to date.
The family named Benny after the skeleton character from Halloweentown — a classic Halloween movie. From grocery shopping trips to nightly storytimes, Benny soon became a staple in Theo’s life.
While Theo no longer insists that Benny go everywhere, he still wants his buddy to sit in his room through the night. Brady places the skeleton in a rocking chair while Theo sleeps, keeping him company.
This week, Brady shared the family’s most recent addition — a skeleton dog from Home Depot. With the help of Brady’s Instagram followers, Theo’s newest pal was named Zero after the dog from The Nightmare Before Christmas.
