Contigo recalled 5.7-million of its Contigo® Kids Cleanable Water Bottles yesterday over the possibility of the bottles’ clear silicone spouts possibly detaching and posing a choking hazard. This Contigo water bottle 2020 recall comes on the heels of an August 2019 water bottle recall by the brand. In fact, the replacement lids from the August 2019 recall are also part of the recall announced on February 19, 2020.
The US Consumer Product Safety Commission stated in a news release, “Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled water bottles and the replacement lids provided in the previous recall.” They wrote, “Take them away from children.”
The recall comes after 427 reports of the spout detaching from the bottle, with 27 detached spouts found in children’s mouths.

The items were sold in stores like Costco, Walmart, Target and other online merchants from April 2018 through February 7, 2020. Bottle with black spout bases and black spout cover models were recalled. They come in three sizes – 13, 14, and 20 ounce – and four colors. If you find the recall number 20-074 printed on the rim and bottom of your bottle, Contigo advises stopping use immediately.
Additional information reports the bottles were imported for sales by Contingo USA’s Chicago headquarters.
In addition to Contigo® Kids Cleanable Water Bottles sold in the US, 157,000 of the bottles were sold in Canada and about 28,000 in Mexico.
In its news release, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission said, “Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled water bottles and the replacement lids provided in the previous recall, take them away from children, and contact Contigo for a free water bottle. Consumers who received replacement lids in the previous recall should contact Contigo for the new water bottle.”
