TikTok — a place abundant in memes, laughs and dangers in the form of viral challenges. Viral challenges with serious risks are constant, from the salt challenge to the tripping jump challenge. If it’s not putting the user at risk, it’s most likely putting those around them in harm’s way. The same can be said about the latest challenge to hit TikTok feeds — the Cha Cha Slide challenge.
The challenge goes like this: play the “Cha Cha Slide” by DJ Casper in your car while driving and get ready to “groove” to the lyrics. Follow the lyrics as you would for the dance, but instead of moving your body, you move your car. “Slide to the left” means jerk your steering wheel to the left and for “slide to the right,” you jerk your steering wheel to the right. These aren’t just little movements, but usually harsh enough to swerve into nearby lanes, even into oncoming traffic lanes.
For the “crisscross” part of the dance – drivers swerve quickly in both directions.
It’s not hard to see the high-risk the challenge poses. If one was to partake in the challenge, you would think it would be on a dead road, where no other cars, pedestrians, or obstacles in sight. However, drivers are doing the challenge just about anywhere for a chance to go viral: intersections, parking lots, residential streets, dark roads, even slippery/frozen surfaces.
It’s similar to the Kiki challenge, or “In My Feelings” challenge that took the internet by storm back in 2018. In the challenge, one jumps out of a moving car and dance alongside it to Drake’s “In My Feelings” plays. Injuries, of course, followed. From tripping while trying to keep up with their moving vehicle to bumping into nearby poles, even crashing cars, the challenge quickly caught traction for how dangerous it was.
Hopefully, the “Cha Cha Slide” won’t have the same fate — leaving dangerous driving off the streets and everyone’s TikTok feeds. To see one of many TikToks featuring the challenge, watch the video below.
