The six-year-old daughter of George Floyd — the man who was killed last week in a confrontation with Minneapolis police — is going viral for her appearance at a peaceful protest on Tuesday. Gianna has also been seen at press conferences and on a Good Morning America interview with her mother, Roxie Washington.
“I miss him…he played with me,” Gianna told GMA.
During the interview, Washington revealed that Gianna doesn’t know the full story behind her father’s death. Washington told young Gianna that her father died “because he couldn’t breathe.”
“I had closed the door so I could watch the news. I went in the room and I said ‘Gianna, why did you open the door?’ She said ‘Something’s going on with my family,’” Washington said. “She said ‘I hear them. I hear them saying my Daddy’s name.’”
In another video that went viral on social media, Gianna can be seen perched on the shoulders of former NBA player Stephen Jackson, who is a close friend of her father’s. Together, they stand in a sea of people peacefully protesting in Minneapolis. In it, she says, “Daddy changed the world!”
The heartbreaking clip is one of many being shared across social media as Floyd’s family faces the public amid nationwide protests that began from Floyd’s death.
This week, Terrence Floyd — George’s brother — appeared at the site of his brother’s death to condemn looters and rioters. He also called for peaceful protests, education, and voting. Watch that video here.
