When 17-year-old Julia Buck was severely injured in a car wreck last month, she thought she was a goner. After weeks of recuperation and hours of surgery, however, the New Jersey teen has made a recovery that one doctor called a “miracle.”
Buck’s life changed forever on April 7, when she and three of her friends were driving home from an ice cream parlor. Along the way, the group was involved in an accident where all four sustained severe injuries.
According to a statement on GoFundMe, a fearful Buck spoke to her mother Jennifer in the moments following the crash.
“Julia was almost certain she was grasping her last breaths and speaking to her mother for the last time,” the statement read.
Fortunately, all four teens survived the crash. However, Buck came away with extensive injuries, including fractures in her neck, pelvis, femurs, ankle, left arm and left elbow.
“[She] just about broke every bone in her body except her right arm,” Buck’s mother told CBS 3. “She had 50 hours of surgery.”
Over a month after the accident, Buck is alive and ready to get on with her life in spite of her extensive injuries.
“It’s hard sitting here watching life go on for everyone else and I’m stuck here,” Buck told CBS3 from her bed in a rehabilitation clinic. “So it makes me want to get going and try to get home so I can get back with everyone and back to my normal life.”
A Community Offers Support
During her recovery, Buck has enjoyed the overwhelming support of the community. Raffles and food drives were among the events organized by locals to help the Buck family in their time of need.
On Sunday, May 16, the South Jersey community gathered to show their support for Buck and her family.
“I have not cried in almost 40 days, but I almost feel like this community has shown how amazing they are,” Buck’s mother said of the event.
“In our lowest time, they’ve come through for us,” Buck’s father, Ronald, agreed.
Buck’s situation has even drawn messages of support from celebrities including football player Wendell Smallwood and actresses Olivia Munn and former Glee star Lea Michelle.
“I hope that you know how strong you are,” Munn said in a video message to Buck.
“I just want you to know that I’m thinking about you and I’m sending you so much love and strength,” offered Michelle in her own message.
“I watched Glee all the time growing up, it’s probably one of my favorite shows still,” a starstruck Buck said.
The 17-year-old still has a ways to go to a full recovery, but says this difficult experience has helped her put her life into perspective.
“It’s horrible what happened to me and my friends but it’s nice to see who is really there for you,” she said.
