Kohl’s cares about families’ health. In fact, the department store chain is continuing this ongoing mission as 2020 gets underway. That’s the statement the retailer is making today with the launch of its Eating Healthy at Home program.
Part of Kohl’s Healthy at Home, a family wellness initiative, Eating Healthy at Home is a collaboration with The Alliance for a Healthier Generation (Healthier Generation). The program’s aim: to make families aware that eating healthy can be easy and affordable, a concept Kohl’s is seeking to spread to homes, schools and communities.
“Children are more likely to engage in healthy behaviors if they feel supported by important adults in their lives both at home and at school,” Kathy Higgins, chief executive officer at the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, tells Parentology. “Not only does a healthy lifestyle lead to better family engagement, but enhanced social skills and academic achievement.”
The program, Higgins says, is not just about eating. “It’s about how to holistically support children, families and communities.
The Eating Healthy at Home approach focuses on “bite-sized” daily goals, with accompanying tips, that can become long-lasting healthy habits. An example of those put forth on the program’s blog:
- Eat a healthy breakfast
- Stretch for 10 minutes
- Drink enough water
- Take a 15-minute walk
- Express gratitude – list 5 things you are grateful for
- Eat one additional serving of fruit or vegetables
- Get 8 hours of sleep
Eating Healthy at Home’s tips, recipes, shopping guides, webinars, social media/channels and activities promoting healthy eating can be found at Kohl’s Healthy at Home and HealthierGeneration.org websites. The site is free, as well as available in both English and Spanish.
“We also work with school leaders and educators, with technical and training assistance on the ground and online,” Higgins says, “to determine how we can best aid them in putting together events and talking about how to eat healthier everywhere kids live, learn and play.”
In 2019, Kohl’s and Healthier generation held a back-to-school event at seven schools in St. Louis, Missouri and Columbia, South Carolina. Distributed to students, the 2,400 healthy kits contained pillows to promote healthy sleep habits, stress ball for anxiety relief, jump ropes for exercise/playtime and water bottles.
Eating Healthy at Home is a continuation of the 2019 Kohl’s collaboration with Healthier Generation, which is projected to extend through 2021. This involves a $2 million commitment, made possible through the Kohl’s Cares cause merchandise program. Through this initiative, Kohl’s sells children’s books and toys, where 100% of the net profit benefits the health and wellness of families in communities.
For over a decade, Healthier Generation has brought its wellness message, resources and tools to schools, youth-serving organizations, businesses, and communities, reaching more than 29 million children in the US.
Higgins says Healthier Generation’s partnership with Kohl’s was a natural fit. “The Kohl’s brand is about focusing on health for children, families and communities, which is exactly the work we do, so we feel quite fortunate to be in partnership with them.”
Through this partnership, helpful tips and tools to eat healthy at home will also be shared among social media channels, a place where support and encouragement is available. Parents, families and school staff members will have the opportunity to share Healthier Generation’s social posts and bolster nutritional engagement in the community.
“We want to make available resources that are unique and modified to a family’s needs,” Higgins says. “Social media lets families connect and share how they’re achieving their goals. It’s also a place to celebrate achievements.”
