Dancing with the Stars professional Louis van Amstel took to social media after a substitute fifth-grade teacher bullied his 11-year-old son after stating his gratitude for his upcoming adoption. The incident was prompted when the substitute taught a pre-Thanksgiving lesson to the class.
Classmates repeated the substitute’s comments on his child’s gratitude, “That’s nothing to be thankful for” she had said. She went on to promote her own views on homosexuality to the 30-kid classroom, she said, “Two men living together is a sin. Homosexuality is wrong.”
Three girls tried to stop the teacher’s rant, eventually leaving the classroom to get the principal when she wouldn’t. The substitute was escorted from the building, still arguing. The van Amstel’s son, only identified as D.M., said he understood what the substitute meant, but didn’t want to take part in the investigation in fear of it affecting his upcoming adoption.
“It’s absolutely ridiculous and horrible what she did,” van Amstel added. “We were livid. It’s 2019 and this is a public school.”
He posted a video to his Twitter account explaining the situation to followers. Since publishing the tweet, it’s gone viral across social media with support and demand for the substitute teacher to get punished. His neighbors decorated their house with paper hearts
The incident took place at Deerfield Elementary School in Utah just last week. Van Amstel and his husband were calling in immediately. With the help of the students, the story was formed and now being investigated.
