What happens at home stays at home — that is, until it appears online. A photo of a baby with extreme acrylic nails was uploaded to “Reddit’s trashy forum” back in May of 2020. Not everyone was excited to see it then, and moms are firing up the internet once more with their complaints about the picture this month.
The nails are longer than most adults would have and they’re blinged out. Besides rhinestones and glitter, one nail even features a Louis Vuitton logo on it. Whether the mom decided this was a joke or seriously thought this was a good idea doesn’t matter to the people who saw it and weren’t shy to comment on it.
One person said they felt genuinely uncomfortable about the whole situation while another said, “The obscenity. A baby…”
The nail art was also referred to as “trashy” and “awful.”
One person didn’t seem to see the harm in it, writing, “As long as they were stuck on with an adhesive tab (like a STICKER) I don’t see anything wrong with taking a picture in them to be silly or play dress up.”
Another person wrote, “…Why do people have to assume the worst, and turn some light-hearted cute baby pictures into something awful?”
Other people said the nails were probably press-on nails that were taken off after the photo op.
Safety Concerns

While some people’s comments leaned toward taste — liking or disliking the length and designs — others were more concerned about the baby’s safety. It’s known that babies and infants can scratch themselves with their natural nails, never mind fake ones. Some said they were concerned the baby would poke her eye out or hurt other parts of her body.
As one person noted: “So when my kid was about 6 months [old] he got his entire finger under my eyelid before I could move away. This picture terrifies me.”
Another said, “gotta be painful once you bash your fingernails into a wall on accident.”
Among all of the comments (the thread has been archived on Reddit), there hasn’t been a response from the baby’s mother or whoever put these nails on. Whether this was meant to be a joke, funny photo op, or a serious baby manicure day, we just don’t know and will probably never find out.
Why is it making the rounds again on the internet and blowing up Parentology’s website via Google searches? We don’t know that, either.
What we do know? One picture is certainly worth a thousand words on the internet. Check out the list of Reddit comments below.
