“The Governor of California, Gavin Newsom, said recently, ‘Every single person in California should have their bags packed and be ready to evacuate,'” Our Future Now Co-Host Jonah Gottlieb, a Sonoma County, California resident says. “As of the time we’re recording this, I have a bag of all my valued possessions in the car in case the winds shift and the fires hop the freeway and I have to go.”
Though this is frightening unto itself, Co-Host Natalie Mebane breaks it down further pointing to Newsom’s recommendation people have their cars pointed nose-out in case they need to flee. What stood out for Mebane? “The assumption that everyone in harms’ way has a car.”
This episode kicks off with reflections on the recent Democratic National Convention, then gets personal as co-hosts Jonah Gottlieb and Natalie Mebane share their experiences with California’s fires and how climate change around the world impacts people of color and those struggling socio-economically far more harshly than others.

Our Future Now is a collaboration between Parentology, the National Children’s Campaign and Goal 17 Media.
The National Children’s Campaign (NCC) is a national nonprofit organization that amplifies the voices of America’s 74 million children and youth, making sure our nation’s political leaders prioritize issues –health, education, climate and environment, child welfare, gun violence, child immigration, LGBTQ+ rights, and youth civic engagement — that matter to those who are too young to vote. You can read more about today’s episode on the NCC blog here.
Goal 17 Media is a media network producing podcasts, videos and documentaries that inspire individuals and contribute to the common good.
