A voluntary recall notice went out today on lids of the popular Contigo® Kids Cleanable Water Bottles due to their silicon spouts presenting a choking hazard. An alert from the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission says, “Contigo has received 149 reports of the spout detaching, including 18 spouts found in children’s mouths.”
Per a statement on the manufacturer’s website, “Contigo® identified that the water bottle’s clear silicone spout in some cases may detach from the lid posing a potential choking hazard. No injuries have been reported. But, out of an abundance of caution, we encourage consumers to find out if they have an affected water bottle lid and order a free replacement lid.”

This impacts 5.7 million water bottles sold in the US between April 2018 through June 2019. Beyond that, 157,000 were sold in Canada and approximately 28,000 in Mexico. Most were purchased from stores including Costco, Walmart and Target, with many being sold online, as well.
Consumers may have purchased the bottles in various sizes –13-, 14- and 20-ounce — and colors, materials, graphics and multi-packs.
A video on Contigo’s website explains what to look for when determining whether a water bottle is part of the recall and how to claim a free replacement lid.
“Out of an abundance of caution, we encourage consumers to find out if they have an affected water bottle lid and order a free replacement lid,” Contigo said in a statement. “We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience.”
