Does your child struggle with anxiety? Tapping therapy (also known as EFT, which stands for Emotional Freedom Techniques, might be just the right tool to calm your child’s worries — and yours, too.
What Is Tapping Therapy?
Tapping is a simple and powerful method to help relieve stressors, emotional issues, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), weight loss, and other conditions. More and more doctors, psychiatrists, and individuals are beginning to use the technique, which is a combination of ancient Chinese acupressure and modern psychology.
“It works by tapping on certain acupressure points on the face and body,” Energy Therapist Kelly Elliott says. “At the same time, the user verbalizes their feelings surrounding their negative emotion.”
Why Does Tapping Work?
According to Elliott, many scientific studies have proven that tapping calms the part of the brain that produces stress hormones. The emotional mind, she says, begins to essentially turn off. “This allows for more logical thinking and reasoning to take over and sets off a whole chain of reactions to restore balance in the body.”
Tapping is often recommended for individuals who struggle with anxiety. EFT calms “the fight, flight, or freeze response that can hijack a person’s ability to relax,” Elliott says.
How Should You Approach It?
Elliott explains you can introduce tapping when your children are as young as four years old. Parents can initiate the tapping. “Have the child recount their day before bed — what they liked and what they didn’t like — and tap on the child as they talk,” Elliott says. “When children get a few years older, begin encouraging them to tap on themselves anytime they feel upset.”
To help with bigger issues, Elliott advises parents to reach out to an EFT practitioner, a licensed professional who can pinpoint the techniques to help a child who’s really struggling.
One of the most well-known EFT companies is The Tapping Solution, which was founded in 2007 by siblings Jessica, Nick, and Alex Ortner. The company creates videos that allow tappers to follow along at home.
Also in their ‘tapping toolbox” are children’s books, such as Gorilla Thumps and Bear Hugs by Alex Ortner, that introduce kids to the concept of tapping. Their The Tapping Solution App is a good option for the entire family to relieve stress on-the-go. Tapping works for the whole family, not just kids.
Once your children understand EFT and how it can help them quickly calm down, it will become a valuable tool they can use for the rest of their lives.
