The first big dance challenge of 2021 is here, courtesy of an up-and-coming hip-hop talent. The latest TikTok trend is the “Buss It” challenge, inspired by the hit song by Texas rapper Erica Banks. The young artist is now blowing up thanks to the popular challenge, as TikTokers and celebrities join in on the new dance craze.
“Buss It” has flown under the radar since Banks first released the song back in the summer of 2020. However, a January 1 post from TikTok user Erika Davila unexpectedly brought the single into the public eye, creating a new TikTok craze in the process.
The video shows Davila dancing to a clip from “Buss It,” which contains a sample from the classic Nelly hit “Hot In Herre.”
“Someone do this transition but all prettied up omg plzzz,” a caption on the video reads. As the song segues from the Nelly clip into the chorus, Davila drops into a twerking maneuver.
Within days Davila’s video racked up millions of views as TikTokers everywhere took up the “Buss It” challenge. The clip has since been viewed over 16 million times, while the audio has been used by over 83 thousand users taking part in the trend.

Davila herself even posted a follow-up video of herself joining in the trend she created. “Thank you to everyone doing this, I love the power,” she quipped in her caption.
Embracing the “Buss It” Challenge
As always, the TikTok community has found ways to their own unique twists to the challenge. Inevitably, some users are getting their families and even their pets involved in unpredictable ways.
Even Banks herself joined in on the challenge her song inspired. The rapper has even more to dance about than usual now that the “Buss It” challenge has propelled her song into Apple Music’s Top 10 list.
“Initially I didn’t like the song when it was completed so having it go viral wasn’t something I thought about like that,” Banks told Okayplayer about the hit song. “It’s a good feeling to see ‘Buss It’ go viral… It feels unreal yet exciting. I didn’t expect it to blow up so fast.”
Judging by the number of famous influencers and celebrities taking up the “Buss It” challenge, we think it’s safe to say Banks’ star could continue to rise for years to come. Celebs like Gabrielle Union, Monica, and Tracee Ellis Ross have posted their own takes on the challenge — although some couldn’t resist adding a little twist.
