Most kids wouldn’t dare tell their parents to “shut up” in fear of a scolding. However, for a chance at internet fame, kids are braving the challenge with the viral “Shut Up Prank” on TikTok. Parentology first reported on it in September, and it’s making waves over social media again this week.
The challenge is fairly simple and revolves around a staged conversation. In most attempts, a mom initiates a conversation with their child while the dad is within hearing distance. Typically, the mom will give the child an order, such as asking them to get an item or clean something up. Then, the child responds negatively and yells, “Shut up!”
The point of the prank is to record the father’s realtime reaction. As many would expect, it has resulted in more than a few angry dads going viral on TikTok. This TikTok, for example, has a child yelling at their mom after being told to clean the cat’s litterbox. The dad turns around in disbelief and is dumbfounded when he’s told it’s just a prank.

Shut Up Prank Goes Viral
However, not all parents become victims of the prank. When a father and son teamed up for the prank, the mom acted shocked before saying she had already seen the trend on TikTok and wasn’t fooled.
Others are creating staged parodies of the prank, like this one that has quite the unexpected ending. After a dad hears his son being disrespectful, the video cuts to the dad outside patting dirt down with a shovel. When the mom yells that it was all a prank, the dad jokingly asks why he wasn’t told sooner.
On TikTok, #shutupprank has over six million views right now. The trend has also gone viral across social media through reuploaded compilations. More videos can be seen below.
