Snap Inc., owners of the social media app Snapchat, recently unveiled the third version of their Spectacles sunglasses, aptly named: Spectacles 3. The sunglasses enable users to take high-definition photos and videos that sync wirelessly to cell phones. A suite of 3D Effects personalizes them via augmented reality (AR) for Snapchat.
In a press release, Snap Inc. wrote, “Spectacles 3 capture depth and dimension the way our eyes do. This new ability provides a rich 3D canvas for self-expression.” This is achieved through two cameras that provide added depth.
The larger appeal of Snap’s Spectacles 3 and earlier launches is being able to capture a moment on camera without having to retrieve a camera and risk missing a moment. While you do need to be wearing Spectacles 3 for recording, the experience itself is relatively hands-free. Stopping to manually upload to Snapchat is required, though.
Snap’s goal is to better the human experience, specifically by incorporating media into users’ reality.
The launch provides a visual update from Spectacles 2, with the new iteration being less clunky and offering a more sophisticated aesthetic. The steel frame features two color options: semi-matte black Carbon or gold Mineral.
The new update comes with a hefty price tag, jumping from $150 to $380. The brand is pushing for luxury and exclusivity with Spectacles 3, which is a potential problem for younger Snapchat users with limited budgets. The initial launch of Spectacles was promoted for the general market of everyday Snapchat users, sold at a much lower price tag, and was accessible through vending machines.
Spectacles 3 will be available online this November at $380 price point.
