Why did you become a teacher?
When my daughter was born I went back to school for my early childhood degree. As she grew so did my classes and the grades I taught and the subjects developed. I was fascinated by her development and wanted to know everything I could learn.
How has the last year affected your students and your teaching approach?
In March 2020, I never heard of Zoom. Sometimes it is good to challenge yourself and see where it takes you. I ended up having the best year ever and added many new classes. I wrote 10 new curriculums using my time at home wisely. Workwise it was an awesome year!
What’s a creative solution you use to keep kids engaged or motivated during COVID?
I use a lot of humor in my classes. I always have jokes and add fun videos to help explain the concepts..
What resources do you like to use in the classroom or in teaching remotely?
You Tube children videos are colorful, add music and joy to classes.
What is your experience with bullying in the classroom?
I create a joyful atmosphere so bullying has not been an issue. However, always talk to the children involved separately but with respect and explain clearly the issue. I think children really want to be friends, sometimes they just don’t know how and then go in a negative direction. My goal is to redirect them to positive interactions and getting along.
How do you gauge if your students are succeeding?
You can tell by a child’s face, comments and body language when they understand the material and are thriving. As I explain new concepts, I always ask students to raise their hand to confirm they understand.
What’s a fun thing students don’t know about you?
I lived in China for 2 years and taught classes in an orphanage.
What’s the one book you wish all students would read?
Books by Shel Silverstein. Brilliant work!
What is your primary educational goal, and what are you most proud of as a teacher?
I am proud of the influence and connection I have made with well over 1000 children. I am beloved and my classes are colorful and joyful. I get raving reviews from parents and lots of hugs, smiles and love from children. What else can you ask for?
