James Gross teaches English/Reading, Math, Science / Biology / Chemistry, and Extracurricular — and he’s one of the Teachers We Love in 2021. You can learn more about him in the interview below, and at The Teacher Marketplace.
Why did you become a teacher?
I come from a family of educators! Also, to honor my dad who unexpectedly passed away this last year.
What is the funniest moment you’ve experienced a teacher?
Teaching the wrong lesson to my 5th graders. They let me go halfway through the lesson before acknowledging that I was teaching the wrong lesson!
How has the last year affected your students and your teaching approach?
It has provided access to different modalities and allowed for greater engagement and access to student learning. Students have taken control of their learning, and they now have more than ever before. It is wonderful to see that they’ve acquired their voice within our community of learners.
What’s a creative solution you use to keep kids engaged or motivated during COVID?
Implementing formative assessments as games and competitions that allow for students to re-focus, while also allowing educators to CFU (checking for understanding).
What resources do you like to use in the classroom or in teaching remotely?
Nearpod, Clever, All-in-Learning, MobyMax, Canva, MobyMax, and Spatial Chat.
What is your experience with bullying in the classroom?
You need to make the classroom a safe place and establish a level of respect for one another. I encourage and welcome all participation and clearly indicate a zero-tolerance rule for bullying.
How do you gauge if your students are succeeding?
By tracking student progress and visually showing them so that they can become motivated and inspired to be the best they can be. It is important to acknowledge accomplishments and set realistic goals and milestones. I lead by example and try to inspire students to be inspired!
What’s a fun thing students don’t know about you?
I am a third-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do!
What’s the one book you wish all students would read?
Wonder by R.J. Palacio.
What is your primary educational goal, and what are you most proud of as a teacher?
Education efficacy and equity!
