Rapper Megan Thee Stallion, who brought us the “Body Ody Challenge,” is at it again with another viral dance trend that’s blowing up social media. The TikTok “Cry Baby” challenge has been building up steam for months. However, a recent post by the hip hop diva brought new life, solidifying her status as the queen of viral dance trends.
Megan released her song “Cry Baby,” featuring guest artist Da Baby, last November on her album Good News. Although the song wasn’t a lead single, it became an instant hit on TikTok. By December, users had started a booty-twerking dance challenge to accompany it.
Fast-forward to February 3, when the release of the provocative “Cry Baby” music video brought renewed interest to the song. As of March 31, the video has been viewed 37 million times on YouTube, according to Distractify.
Following the video’s release, Megan took to Instagram to show off some dance moves from the music video. She also shared a few videos of her fans getting down to the hit song.
Megan’s post immediately went viral, eventually gaining more than 2 million likes on Instagram. It also inspired more “Cry Baby” challenge videos, this time emulating specific dance moves from the video.
For some users, however, the video’s professional choreography is a far cry from the simple booty-shaking of the original challenge.
“That’s too much to remember, I quit,” said one Instagram user.
“These ‘challenges’ seem so intense, and I don’t know how these girls do it,” commented another.
The hashtag #crybabychallenge currently has over 108 million views on TikTok and includes numerous attempts at both the old and new versions of the trend. Meanwhile, the song itself has benefited from the viral success, selling over one million units in the US so far.
