A newborn baby is always a cause for celebration, but let’s face it — they don’t always come out ready to audition for Gerber right away. A mom in Arkansas found this out when her newborn daughter came out looking a little different than expected. At least she had what she needed to dominate the TikTok “ugly baby” challenge.
Lucy Baehr gave birth to her daughter, Reese, back in October of 2020. The mother was excited to welcome her new daughter after a long period of trying to have a baby. When Reese was born, however, Baehr found her reaction to be less than enthusiastic.
“Her nose was incredibly swollen and her eyes were beady,” the mom told Today. “I remember looking at my husband saying, ‘Well, at least she’s healthy?'”
Months later in July 2020, Baehr caught wind of a TikTok trend where parents share pictures of their “ugly” babies — and realized she had a lock.
“This trend started where people were saying, ‘we thought our newborn was going to be so cute and they were not,” Baehr told KARK news. “I was like, ‘I win, I win! I win this!'”
Baehr shared her video to TikTok on July 11, where it became an instant hit. To date, the clip has drawn nearly 4 million likes and over 44 thousand views. Commenters compared baby Reece’s appearance to Mr. Bean, Mr. Burns from The Simpsons, and even Dobby the elf from the Harry Potter series.
In addition to sparking off more ugly baby posts, Baehr said her video received backlash from some commenters.
“People are commenting like, ‘oh my gosh, not a mom calling her baby ugly! You are a horrible mom. She’s going to grow up with self-esteem issues,'” the mother said.
However, Baehr said she didn’t believe the post would have a negative effect on Reese.
“She’s fine! I’ll tell her about it one day,” Baehr said. “This whole situation is going to go in her baby book. She is going to have a great sense of humor.”
