Triller is a social media platform where users can watch short videos and upload their own. The app describes itself as a “social video community where you can show the world who you are by capturing flawless videos and sharing them in seconds.”
Despite its 2015 launch, Triller is quickly rising as a frontrunner in the discussion about TikTok replacements. Both President Donald Trump and son Donald Trump Jr. touted the app as a replacement and have created videos on Triller. In one video, Trump Jr. denounced TikTok, saying that the app “could haunt your kids forever.” While the endorsements helped Triller make headlines, the app also faced a surge in downloads as users sought out alternatives to TikTok in recent months.
Triller has also steadily grown as a community that is primarily known for its emphasis on music. A typical Triller video involves users dancing or lipsyncing along to songs, which are usual hip hop or pop hits.
The platform also has a large focus on its celebrity presence, with famous musicians like Cardi B, Pitbull, Post Malone, and Trey Songz on the app. These artists can often be seen promoting their own music in-app, such as dancing along to their latest single.
How Does Triller Work?

Triller is broken into three main feeds: Following, Music, and Social. On Social, users can find new, trending, and popular videos. The Following feed is based on accounts a user follows, or hashtags they are subscribed to. The Music feed shows videos created through the app’s Music Video option, offering more music-centric content.
Just like any social media platform, open feeds allow users to stumble across any type of content, regardless of whether or not they are following the account. Triller also has a search option, where users can look up specific users or hashtags.
Triller has in-app currency — Gold and Gems — that users store in their “Wallet.” Gold can be bought in-app, costing users between $0.99 and $99.99. Once purchased, users can donate Gold to others as a form of support. When users have enough gold, they can change them into Gems, which can be exchanged for real cash.
A user’s “Wallet” allows them to view their gold balance, gift history, and the option to buy gold. If users are verified content creators, they also can view their gems balance.
Does Triller Have Parental Controls?
Triller currently doesn’t have any parental controls in place. The app does have a minimum age requirement of 13 years but has no verification system in place. In order to create a Triller account, one only needs their phone number or email address. They can also use existing Apple, Facebook, Twitter, and Snapchat accounts to register for a Triller account.
Like many other social media platforms, users have the option to set their accounts to private. However, while it may protect younger users from having their content seen by strangers, it does nothing to stop them from seeing everyone else’s content.
Triller’s Community Guidelines ban “Mature/Graphic Content” like “nudity, sexually explicit posts, sexually suggestive acts, unintentionally provocative content, shares or messages.” Despite this, parents may find many videos in-app inappropriate due to suggestive choreography or lyrics.
