The new Disney+ docuseries On Pointe follows students ages eight to eighteen during a season in New York City’s world-renowned School of American Ballet (SAB). It’s been talked about for months, and today Disney released the first full On Pointe trailer.
And. It’s. Amazing.
Docuseries focusing on kids can be hit or miss. Exploitive reality shows (you know the ones), like to zoom in on the parental drama or adults pushing children to the point of tears. The best ones — like Netflix’s Cheer from early this year — focus on the serious passion and artistry that drives these young people, and the sacrifices they’re willing to make to reach their goals. That’s the kind of drive you’re seeing in the On Pointe trailer.
If you don’t know about SAB, it is one of the top youth ballet institutions in the world. The series features unprecedented access to SAB, and follows the lives of students who dream of becoming professional ballet dancers — and who have the skill to back up that dream. The prize for these kids?
“While older students from all over the country rigorously train for professional careers, younger students from New York City are put through their paces as they rehearse and perform in New York City Ballet’s holiday classic George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker onstage at Lincoln Center,” says the press release. To paraphrase the song “New York, New York,” if you can make it there, they can make it anywhere.
Directed and produced by Larissa Bills, the series is executive produced by the big names at Imagine Entertainment: Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, Sara Bernstein and Justin Wilkes; Matthew O’Neill serves as executive producer from DCTV. Check out the Disney On Pointe trailer below.
On Pointe premieres Friday, December 18, streaming exclusively on Disney+. Follow Disney+ on Facebook.
