On Wednesday, former Fleetwood Mac guitarist Lindsey Buckingham joined TikTok just like his ex-girlfriend Stevie Nicks. The reason? To take part in the Fleetwood Mac “Dreams” challenge (a.k.a. the “Cranberry Juice Challenge” a.k.a. the “Fleetwood Mac Challenge” a.k.a. the “Ocean Spray Challenge” a.k.a. the “CranberryDreams Challenge”).
The Fleetwood Mac challenge has been going on for a while now and getting a lot of coverage, so here is the Cliff’s Notes explanation of how it came to be. We’ll include links at the bottom of the post if you want to deep dive into it all.
The challenge or trend (unintentionally) began when Nathan Apodaca (above, right), who goes by @420doggface208 on TikTok, shot a video that went viral. In it, he swigs from a bottle of Ocean Spray cranberry juice while riding a skateboard and casually lip-synching Fleetwood Mac’s iconic 1977 hit song “Dreams.” That clip has gained more than 52 million views (it’s not worth looking up accurate numbers any longer) and, after the skater told TMZ he got the idea when his car broke down on the way to work, Ocean Spray gave him a new truck filled with bottles of cranberry juice.
That’s what happens when you give a company endless free publicity to young people on social media.
After that, the official Fleetwood Mac Twitter reposted it. Then Mick Fleetwood joined the trend on TikTok. Then Stevie Nicks started a TikTok account and shot her version. And now, Lindsey Buckingham has joined TikTok and shot his video as well. His caption? “Made this with my girls this weekend #dreams #fleetwoodmac #cranberrydreams @420doggface208“
Why This Is Crazy
“Dreams” is the hit song from the band’s Rumours album. During the record’s creation, the members of Fleetwood Mac were all breaking up — including Buckingham and Nicks, who were ending their eight-year relationship. “Dreams” was her song calling him out on his behavior.
That’s not the big deal. He’s sung it with her plenty of times in concert since then, and she’s joined him on many songs that he wrote telling his side of the story. However, Buckingham, 71, recently sued Nicks and the other Fleetwood Mac bandmates Christine McVie, John McVie, and Mick Fleetwood in 2018 after they removed him from their 2018-2019 North American tour.
“Last January, Fleetwood Mac made the decision to continue to tour without me,” Buckingham said at the time in a statement. “I remain deeply surprised and saddened, as this decision ends the beautiful 43-year legacy we built together.”
The reasons behind Buckingham being let go from the band are a he-said/they-said debate. The bottom line is that it surprised fans to see this video since he hasn’t personally interacted with any of them since the lawsuit. TikTok followers like @AGuyWhoWorksInFinance summed up the feeling by saying (in all caps), “STEVIE NICKS AND MICK FLEETWOOD REUNITING COULDN’T GET LINDSEY TO REUNITE WITH THEM BUT A DUDE ON A SKATEBOARD HAS!! WHAT IN THE 2020 IS HAPPENING?!?!”
Reuniting? Not so fast. Buckingham is just sitting on a horse drinking Ocean Spray cranberry juice as the song plays. He doesn’t sing or lip-synch the song, and Nicks or Fleetwood aren’t tagged in the post, leaving the deeper reasons behind why he made the video a mystery.
We can, however, speculate. Buckingham does make money from the song “Dreams” and Rumours album sales. And those are huge right now thanks to this TikTok trend. “Dreams” is still climbing the charts once more, at 42 on Spotify’s Top 50 Viral list and 21 on the streaming service’s Top 200. And, according to Billboard, Rumours has returned to the top 10 list, 42 years after its initial release.
Plus, he’s building a younger audience on social media with this video, and that could help with his other endeavors. As of this writing, Buckingham has nearly 36,000 followers on TikTok and the video has 1.4 million views.
