Instagram is one of the hottest social media platforms for young people. It’s also something that concerns parents very much. While there are plenty of articles about parental controls and ways to tackle cyberbullying on Instagram, it’s difficult to find a parents’ guide to Instagram that covers all the hot topics in one place.
Cyberwise Chats are monthly webinars hosted by Diana Graber, co-founder of Cyberwise, along with Dr. Pamela Rutledge, Director of the Media Psychology Research Center, Arias Collins from Cyber Civics, and Rick Andreoli, Editor-In-Chief of Parentology. Their latest webinar tackles all things Instagram.
Parents’ Guide to Instagram
In this interactive webinar, the Cyberwise Chat team discusses parental concerns about Instagram. Some of the topics they include in this session are:
- Instagram collecting data on your kids
- Kids accessing inappropriate content (pornography, violence, fake news, dangerous challenges, etc.)
- A “compare and despair” atmosphere on the platform
- Possible links to anxiety and depression, and more
On top of this, it’s been reported that Facebook — the company that owns Instagram — is planning to build a version of Instagram for kids under age 13. The panel discusses the motivation behind this move, and if it’s a good idea to have kids that young using it.
