The best animated children’s series and movies can do amazing things — like teach lessons, make us laugh and cry, heal relationships, and help us feel deeply about a lot of different things. And, yes, we’re not just talking about kids when we say “us.” Case in point: Stillwater from Apple TV+.
Stillwater is based on the “Zen Shorts” book series by Jon J Muth, and the first six episodes will premiere globally on Friday, December 4. The story follows siblings Karl, Addy, and Michael as they build a relationship with their next-door neighbor, a wise panda named Stillwater. The three kids will experience life in all of its aspects, with Stillwater opening their eyes to the quiet wonders of the world around them and guiding them through their place within it.
Apple TV+ has been doing some really interesting new cartoon series based on popular books; the recent Doug Unplugs premiere is a perfect example. While Stillwater is still produced for young viewers, the older ages of the three kids make this a show that speaks to a mixed-aged audience. (And adults.) Likewise, the slick mix of animation styles in this series looks next-level awesome — something that will be appreciated by older viewers as well.

Stillwater — Exclusive Clip
While the trailer covers a lot of territory in the show’s six episodes, this exclusive clip is a great example of bringing new and innovative tools to kids so that they can make their way through life. In it, Addy becomes frustrated with her little brother, Karl — as often happens with older siblings. But rather than lash out, she uses some tools Stillwater taught her to make the moment better for herself.
The end result? Well, you’ll have to see for yourself. But it’s fascinating how this moment helps Addy, Karl, AND anyone in the audience who’s paying attention.
