20. Fear of Long Words (Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia)
Ironically, it takes a long word to define a phobia that means the fear of long words.
The fear of long words was once considered a fictional phobia by those who just can’t wrap their heads around the fear. However, Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia is as real as any. This fear can stem from a childhood “popcorn reading,” wherein you’d be selected at random during class to read a portion of text. This phobia can be heightened by the pressure and fear of mispronouncing a long word.
