Within’s Wonderscope app has added a brand new story that is perfect for the Halloween season. “Willowcrest Manor” is the latest to join the collection of stories available on the iOS app, which uses augmented reality (AR) to transform young users’ surroundings into interactive storytelling. Rather than sitting stagnant watching a plot unfold, kids become a character in the story as they read lines aloud.
“This is the first story where we give the child an actual job to do. They play a pivotal role and serve as the main character. In ‘Willowcrest,’ we put the child inside of a giant dollhouse of sorts. The user is given free rein to explore the manor as the story unfolds,” Thor Benitez, Lead Creative and Technical Artist at Within, tells Parentology.
In “Willowcrest Manor,” children transform into a ghost to haunt a house under the guidance of Godfrey, a ghost butler. Their goal? To keep the manor and the late Lady Willowcrest’s hidden treasure safe from intruders. As part of the story, kids become trickster ghosts, making armor come to life and releasing bats into the manor.
When kids think they have their new haunting skills mastered, two sisters come into the manor in search of treasure. An unlikely twist occurs, making Godfrey (and kids) realize that not everyone has cruel intentions, and that smarts and kindness really do matter.
“With any immersive story, we have the opportunity to let the audience live a story first hand. It’s important for us to have a strong moral at the center of each of our stories. We hope that by reading lines out loud and participating in the story directly, kids don’t just learn these lessons by osmosis,” Samantha Storr, Executive Producer of Original Content tells Parentology.
“Our hope is that kids enjoy the pure fun of playing an important part in the narrative. We want them to really feel that they’ve stepped into a tale that can’t take place without them. There are lots of spooky — but not too spooky — ways to participate in ‘Willowcrest Manor,'” says Benitez
Wonderscope is free to download, and pre-loaded with “Wonder’s Lan Ringmaster Wanted.” “Willowcrest Manor” is available now as an in-app purchase. Watch the trailer for “Willowcrest Manor” below:
